Authorities arrest inmate who walked away from reentry program in San Diego [Breaking]

A man who walked away from a community reentry program for inmates was taken into custody in San Diego on Sunday morning, three days after his escape, authorities said.

Kajuan Walker, 28, was arrested by special agents with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, the department said. He was taken to the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in the Otay Mesa area. His case will be referred to the county District Attorney’s Office for prosecutors to consider charges related to his escape from the Male Community Reentry Program in Barrio Logan.

Walker was convicted of robbery and possession of a controlled substance in San Diego County on June 27, 2018, and sentenced to nine years in prison. He moved to the community reentry program March 24 and was scheduled to be released in May 2024. The program allows eligible prison inmates to serve the end of their sentences at the reentry center, which provides them programs to transition back into the community, including job training and substance abuse treatment. Since 1977, 99 percent of all offenders who left state-run camps or community-based programs without permission were apprehended, officials said.
