Councillors hear city should avoid getting 'beyond the point of no return, as we have with HMOs'

Belfast Council is urging Stormont to draw up regulations to control the proliferation of Airbnbs and other short term lets in residential communities.

“Every month in the licensing committee we see the impact of a lack of previous infrastructure around the management of HMOs. It is something we are constantly having to deal with - it is something people in communities are constantly having to deal with. “We need to ensure there is a proper mechanism in place, cutting across departments, to oversee the extent to which short term lets exist in any particular area of this city and beyond.”

Council officers recommended elected representatives refuse the change of use. They said the proposal “would fail to protect existing residential stock for permanent occupation,” was “not considered complementary to the surrounding residential uses,” and “will likely result in adverse effects on residential amenity within this established residential area.”
