Portage’s Port Authority has received a large federal grant to build an accessible fishing pier, but not everyone is happy about it.
The $845,442 grant fulfills a wish list in the 2014 master plan for the Sammie L. Maletta Public Marina.“When I was on the council, this was a discussion. This is a long time coming,” Mayor Sue Lynch said.
The existing fishing pier shares a parking lot with boaters, so accessing the fishing pier at peak times can be challenging, according to the grant proposal. The existing pier has dilapidated pilings, dock remnants and derelict utility components, it said.Carl Simpson told the City Council on Tuesday that from January through April, trash wasn’t picked up at the fishing pier. “There’s loose boards, erosion, trash,” he said.
But those funds were put into the general fund. There aren’t any ARPA funds anymore, city attorney Dan Whitten said.
