Philip Taylor hid behind the moniker "Frosty Bear" as he secretly traded heroin, cocaine and cannabis via the encrypted communications platform on a "commercial scale". The dad sought to net himself "very substantial profits", with meticulous records he kept of his illicit dealings showing that he had also handled more than £1m of dirty cash.
He also arranged a number of meetings with contacts, informing them that he would be driving a Volkswagen Tiguan - the same make and model of a car he had been leasing at the time. Taylor meanwhile sent them images taken inside his then home on North Barcombe Road. On April 18, he had messaged a number of fellow EncroChat users about the fact he had visited Costco to purchase charcoal, a television wall mount and a "wooden pavilion" for a barbecue. His membership card subsequently showed that Taylor had bought all of those items from the wholesaler on that date.
Taylor - who has eight previous convictions for 16 offences, including possession of a class C drug with intent to supply and robbery in 2005 - was eventually arrested on May 28 this year, with a bag containing orange tablets, a tick list, a Mulberry bag, four laptops, a computer, an iPhone and a small quantity of cannabis among the item seized from his home. Police also searched Kitchen 62, recovering an iPhone and an iPad after being allowed into the café by his mum.
