Cheryl Strayed unearths more of her past in TinyBeautifulThings, and says creating the series was the “strangest experience of my life.”
Strayed says Hahn was the right person to play this not-exactly-her character because “there’s this kind of relatability that she has that is really special and unique.” Her flaws, Strayed adds, make her even more qualified to be Sugar. “Kathryn Hahn has to be this character who can receive that from other people and then say to them, ‘Yes, I’m like you. I’m going to try to help you.
Strayed says these adaptations make for a much more vulnerable process than the writing she does herself, and not just because of the audiences they will reach. “With the books, I’m the person who decided exactly what sentences are there and what words are there and what is said. And even though it’s terrifying, at least I’m in command of that,” she says.
Though she says her first love will always be writing books , the experience of being in the writers room has opened up other screenwriting opportunities. During the pandemic, she was hired to write a screenplay about Janis Joplin, and she has a few other projects in the works that she can’t quite talk about yet. “That’s been a fun road to travel, to really, through the course of my writing, stay open. I mean, that’s how I became Sugar,” she says.
That magic is captured in certain moments, such as when Frankie brings her two kids into a field at night and has them close their eyes and wait as a herd of horses walks up to them. They might not have had much money , but her mother conjured those moments when she could. “So many of those scenes that they performed were really right from my life,” says Strayed.
