Gulab Mostofa, 46, made more than £30,000 from selling the fraudulent service books on the online auction site, a court heard. The fraudster was caught out by a series of test purchases which led Trading Standards officers to his home in Brierfield Road, Burnley .
A trading standards officer carried out an eBay search and discovered the same seller had 252 items for sale - each being a major branded service booklet. The seller's history showed they had previously sold 2,500 similar items, Burnley Crown Court heard.Many of the options displayed a blank booklet with the choice to select how many dealer stamps they wanted it marked with.
The trading standards officer made a test purchase, paying £7.10 for a Ford service book. The item arrived a few days later - bearing Mostofa's name and address on the shipping label. The following month, the officer paid £34.95 for a Vauxhall servicing booklet bearing six stamps. The stamps appeared to be from garages in Manchester, Nottingham and Stafford, however the garages confirmed the stamps were fake. Each of the test purchases was also checked by the relevant brand, which confirmed they were not genuine.
