A drone building course at the Teen Tech Center in South Dallas could help get more girls interested in STEM careers.

Girls explored engineering concepts through a seven-week drone building course at the Teen Tech Center at the Juanita J. Craft Recreation Center in South Dallas.that they make up only 34% of the workforce in science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM fields, in the U.S. For young women of color and students from low-income neighborhoods where schools are under-resourced, the barriers to explore STEM careers are even higher.in South Dallas can change that.

In addition to STEM programs like this one, workshops on coding, digital design, robotics, filmmaking and using Photoshop are offered for free at the Teen Tech Center. The center is at the Juanita J. Craft Recreation Center in southeast Dallas and has been around since 2016.The space is maintained by the Park and Recreation Department, but the equipment, like computers and drones, is funded through a partnership with Best Buy and Samsung.

The center helps older students get internships at Best Buy and at the city’s parks department through its “career pathways” program catered to 16- to 19-year-olds who live near the center in South Dallas. Marques Buford, coordinator of the Teen Tech Center, said that the drone-building program for girls was attended by students from all across the Dallas area and that there was a long wait list for it.Kudos to the public and private groups that have come together to help young people get exposed to new opportunities and create the next generation of technicians, engineers and software developers..
