Dusty Baker gets a one-year contract to return to Astros after winning World Series
Owner Jim Crane, left, said negotiations with manager Dusty Baker on a one-year contract extension “took probably 15 minutes.” The club is involved in much lengthier talks with general manager James Click.HOUSTON — The Astros on Wednesday officially confirmed that Dusty Baker will manage the club again in 2023 after he led Houston to a World Series championship this year.
Before Crane hired Baker to lead the Astros in 2020, Baker’s last managerial job was with the Nationals in 2017. Baker guided the Astros to three consecutive American League Championship Series and two pennants. In three seasons under his leadership, the club has a 230-154 record in the regular season and 28-14 in the postseason.
While leading the Astros to a 106-win regular season, Baker won his 2,000th game in May. Of the 12 managers to ever reach the milestone, only Baker and new Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy are not in the Hall of Fame, because neither is eligible.
