Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Mel Stride MP, has provided an update on the situation regarding State Pension compensation for the Women Against State Pension Inequality campaign. He mentioned that he will inform the House of Commons "when there is something to say" about the possibility of compensation for women born in the 1950s who were impacted by the changes to the State Pension age.
During the GMB interview, Ed Balls pressed the DWP head, asking: "Are you going to tell the WASPI women whether they'll get their compensation? When will that happen? Will it be next week? ". Upon being pressed for a definitive timeframe by Ed Balls due to the distress caused nationwide by the Horizon scandal and the contaminated blood scandal, Mr Stride responded: "The WASPI women will think they've been waiting quite a long time and I just wondered will it be in April? ".
Following a six-year inquiry, the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman has concluded that women born in the 1950s, who had their State Pension age readjusted with little notice, should be compensated. It asks for a debate and vote on compensation for millions of women rattled by the changes to the State Pension age.
