The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is moving two million benefit recipients to Universal Credit. This change affects those on legacy benefits like Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit.

The Department for Work and Pensions is to start moving two million more benefit recipients over to a newer benefit within the next few weeks and months. Those who claim older, legacy-style benefits such as Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit will be moved over to Universal Credit as part of a planned Managed Migration.

As part of the migration, the DWP is sending out a final wave of letters urging benefit claimants who are currently on one of the older style benefits to make the switch. The government department has confirmed that it's aiming to complete the process by December 2025, so that all legacy benefits will finish by the start of the next financial year. This will tell you what you need to do and how long you have to move to Universal Credit, but usually, you'll need to move to Universal Credit within three months.

Families claiming the government benefit can borrow up to £812 through what's known as an advance loan or budgeting advance. What is Universal Credit? Universal Credit is an all-in-one government benefit to help with living costs.
