The Department for Work and Pensions will be given police style powers to search people's homes, seize property and arrest people
The Department for Work and Pensions is set to gain arrest, search and seizure powers under a new law as part of a major crackdown on benefits fraud. The government unveiled the proposals today, Monday May 13, aimed at eradicating benefits fraud.
These changes will be introduced to the next Parliament via a new Fraud Bill. The government's plans, titled Fighting Fraud in the Welfare System, indicate that benefits fraud will be 'treated like tax fraud', reports the Express.
