New figures released by the Department for Work and Pensions showed 32 per cent of people sent a letter to switch from legacy benefits had failed to respond
Benefits claimants have been warned that more than a quarter of a million people have had their benefits stopped as part of a huge migration process. In figures released today by the Department for Work and Pensions , and update was given on the change from ‘legacy’ benefits like tax credits to Universal Credit.
The figures also revealed that over that time period 1,140,810 individuals in 771,810 households were sent migration notices in the post. 623,310 of these made a Universal Credit claim, 232,800 households have been awarded transitional protection and 232,830 who were sent migration notices are still going through the Move to UC process.
These were households with one adult above and one adult below state pension age which were described as ‘significantly worse off under the UC system than under legacy benefits’. The IFS said: “Because the reform means they are entitled to UC – rather than the much more generous pension credit – 70% of these households lose out by more than £4,000 per year under the UC system.
