Greg Kelly hopes to help James Ledger to Paris 2024
Stewartfield athlete Greg Kelly hopes an easy partnership with sprinter James Ledger leads to the Paris Paralympics this summer.
Ledger, 30, is current UK record holder for 100m in T11, No.6 in Europe and 14th in the world in his category, which is for little or no light perception and often completely blind competitors.Due to competitors having different variations on their sight, however, athletes run blindfold, tethered to a guide – which is where Greg comes in.
“In the next few weeks we’ve got some big races, including Para World Grand Prix in Paris and Switzerland, and our aim is to run really quickly there, when hopefully there will be good conditions and other fast athletes, the best possible conditions to run in. “The grand prix are the big ones. We’re potentially going to get an invite to run at the London Diamond League , which again would be an awesome experience to run in a stadium with a full crowd, and even sharing the warm-up track with Noah Lyles and some of the world’s best.”He said: “I did a year at Loughborough University, doing my Masters in training with an elite group there, and at the time James was training there with his previous guide.
“When he told me his ambitions for the year it was something that I don’’t think I could have turned down, if we could make it happen. Greg added: “James is in the most severe visually impaired category, so they must run with a guide. The T12, which is the one before, have a choice.
