Toni Collins shares how she's built a career as a sports journalist and how she owns being one of the first Latinas to cover sports for ESPN.

It’s evolved from anchoring segments that appear only on ESPN.com to being on its television networks too. I typically do morning. I also pitch ideas for feature stories, one of which has been nominated for an Emmy this year — the only ESPN nomination in 2019, in English or Spanish — an honor that has made me proud. What were some of the skills that you feel helped you stand out as you were building your career as a sports journalist?Being bilingual has been a huge asset.

Be curious in all you do — regardless of a routine task or a big event. For example, when I worked in Dallas, I knew baseball as a fan but hadn't covered it, which took way more understanding than I had going into it. I realized I needed to learn more so I reached out to Spanish-language radio play-caller Eleno Ornelas. He was kind enough to let me sit in with him at games on my days off. He taught me so much.

I see myself on that set and flash back to the day my mother moved us from Mexico to the United States. I didn’t speak one word of English. I still have an accent, but I'm at the top of my profession reporting in English and representing my Mexican-American roots with pride. It's a one-of-a-kind feeling. If I’m able to achieve it, you can too.

But that risk has paid off. Now I get to co-anchor with the best anchors, reporters and producers covering sports at ESPN. Life is filled with twists and turns. Just keep your eyes and ears open. Never judge your situation as permanent because when you least expect it, it can change and you will be on a different path, hopefully toward bigger goals.
