Here's everything you’ve wanted to know about Gen Z but were afraid to ask: by abebrown716

More than previous generations, they’re open to finding and joining communities online, turning to apps such as Discord, Instagram, Twitch and TikTok to do so, Zebra’s research finds. Increasingly, video games are blended into this, particularly the immersive world ofthat hosted its first virtual concert this spring, a performance by the rapper Travis Scott.

“It’s really easy to find these internet communities and discover new ones,” explains Tiffany Zhong, the cofounder of Zebra. “You can find people on Instagram and Twitter who are interested in the same things you are, and that’s literally how you make new friends.” She speaks with authority here. In the last year, Zebra IQ pivoted from brand consulting to selling software to influencers and brands who want to set up their own digital communities.

One stereotype about Gen Z does seem to hold up in Zhong’s work: a willingness to admit to mental health issues. More than a third said they feel like their mental health has worsened in the last year. What’re they worried about? Increased screentime in quarantine, for one, despite their status as digital natives. Nearly a quarter of the respondents to the Zebra survey said they felt they were spending too much time on TikTok, while 16% expressed similar feelings about their Instagram use.

There’s another stereotype of Gen Zers that paints them as a bunch of nihilists, mad at a system that ignores a worsening climate and stubborn inequality. But this wasn’t really a trait evident in the Zebra findings. In fact, despite everything that has happened in 2020, 71% of the Gen Zers that spoke with Zebra said they were optimistic about what the next few months will bring.
