More older people could push up the benefits bill by claiming Attendance Allowance and Pension Credit.

A former employee at the Department for Work and Pensions has warned that the UK Government’s decision to scrap Winter Fuel Payments for an estimated 10 million State Pension ers could “backfire” and could actually “trigger an increase in the benefits bill”.

The former employee told the Daily Record: “Chancellor Rachel Reeves' removal of Winter Fuel Payments could backfire on her, especially if pensioners then look around for other benefits that they could claim. So Labour's raid on Winter Fuel Payments could trigger an increase in the benefits bill.” Top Money Stories Today The ex-DWP staff member continued: “Pension Credit is £218.15 a week for a single person, but if you have a severe disability for which Attendance Allowance counts, you get an extra £81.50 a week, thus bringing your weekly Pension Credit total to £299.65. You also get additional money for Pension Credit if you are caring for someone and would have received Carer’s Allowance.

Latest State Pension News Responsibility for the Winter Fuel Payment will be transferred to the Scottish Government this year and will be funded from the 2024/25 Scottish Budget.
