Ministers under pressure to pause checks amid warnings that £200m in extra red tape costs will be passed on to the consumer
Ministers are being told to delay or stop checks on fruit and vegetables that could begin from January and are expected to add to foodIn 2022, the UK imported more than half its fruit and vegetables, with nearly 80 per cent of these coming from the EU.
Border checks on several types of EU food imports including meat, fish and dairy, were introduced earlier this year. They came after years of delay from the Conservatives and despite the former Government admitting last year they would add 0.2 per cent to food price inflation over three years. The Government has already allowed the phased introduction of controls on imports of EU goods to wait until 31 July 2025, easing the requirements for certain official documents and the level of controls on animal, plant and other imports from the continent.has learnt that officials told the fresh produce industry earlier this month that there would not be a delay to July of controls, including border inspections, fees and paperwork requirements, for fruit and veg.
Creasy said the UK should join the Pan-European Mediterranean Convention on complicated so-called rules of origin, which also complicate food imports. Mr Jenney also suggested he was sympathetic to calls for pause checks entirely, given the new Government was seeking a veterinary deal, also known as an SPS deal, although food companies are understood to be sceptical that an agreement can be reached quickly and believe it will take years of negotiation.
