Germany awarded three biotech companies grants to help them speed up the development of coronavirus vaccine candidates, but Research Minister Anja Karliczek said any vaccine was unlikely to be widely available before the middle of next year.
Europe’s largest economy has reported a rise in infections in recent days, with the head of Germany’s Robert Koch Institute for infectious diseases blaming negligence and saying it was unclear if a second wave was underway.
“We must continue to assume that vaccines for the broader population will only be available from the middle of next year at the earliest.” “All three of them are promising candidates but we must of course always expect setbacks during the testing phase because it’s one thing to have an effective vaccine but it’s another to have a safe vaccine that people want,” Karliczek said.
