The police car hit the Sable on its passenger side, indicating that the officer was driving the wrong way on Holly Street at the time of the crash.
The wrecked Sable also ended up in a yard on the southeast corner of the intersection, showing the force came from the east, the wrong direction of travel on Holly.
When Courtney stepped onto her porch minutes later, she saw three of the wrecked Sable’s occupants nearby. Holmes was lying on the ground while first responders tried to save his life, Courtney said. The flashing lights of the wrecked Harrisburg cruiser were still activated, she said. The force of the crash pushed the stone steps off their foundation outside Courtney’s neighbor’s home. A metal 19th and Holly Street sign was still lying on the home’s front porch Tuesday afternoon. Deep ruts in the mud of the home’s front yard marked the path the Mercury Sable took after impact.
In a Tuesday press release, Pennsylvania State Police said the Mercury Sable’s driver “fled on foot” and remained unidentified. But Courtney told PennLive she saw the driver standing nearby, trying to get to Holmes while his friends held him back. She said he left minutes later after the ambulance carrying Holmes left the scene.The 19th and Holly area is lined with parked cars, creating a narrow field of vision and limited space for oncoming drivers.
