Corsets are the past, present and future!
wear corsets of all different varieties in order to achieve a so-called feminine physique. “Corsets have made a more visible comeback now, as the current popular silhouette is curvaceous, with large posterior and breasts, with a small waist,” says McKnight. “They’re a way to achieve this silhouette without surgery, and less permanent and less expensive than surgery.”
A lot of emerging designers are experimenting with the corset too, which is helping to invest new meaning in the item. For example, Brooklyn-based creativestarted making corsets that double as “wearable paintings” after seeing tapestries at a thrift store that depicted women wearing corsets.
“I’m interested in the corset as an extension of our society’s ongoing love for body modification and the extreme ways we like to present ourselves,” says designer, who finds the process of making corsets a technical challenge. The 25-year-old, who lives in New York, often makes corsets in bright colors and uses rhinestones and text.
While today’s shapes are less constricting and the pieces often incorporate only a few characteristic elements such as boning, paneling, and lacing, Maeda believes the corset is still a symbol of contradictory messages: “On the one hand it is being recontextualized as an empowering symbol of women's sexuality, while also reflecting society’s regulations on the female body, including its obsession with an hourglass shape.
