'We have been denied the power of recognizing our fight, resistance, rebellions, and cimarronajes (uprisings) that have always characterized the history of Black communities in Puerto Rico.'
The experience of that 13-year-old girl imagined earlier is the lived reality of millions of children and teens throughout the entire region. Imagine their future. Imagine they make it to adulthood. Picture their effort, their sacrifices, and their journey. Picture their intellect and their potential never making it through the gates of racism, but instead staying with them as inequality makes them just another statistic.
Now picture this awakening. Imagine it in the context of this global uprising against racism and the new opportunities to have our voices heard. Imagine racism being recognized and challenged throughout the world, with anti-racist policy leading our way forward. Imagine the eradication of the, replaced instead by sustainable, fruitful opportunities for Black communities.
Imagine the lives of our Black youth in a world in which they don’t fear death because of their skin color. Imagine what their lives could look like without the threat of a mistake putting them in jail. Imagine the lives of our Black children, living life to the fullest and without being scared. Imagine them in a world where they can contribute to our societies with their arts, talents, and solutions.
I want to see a world in which our children’s Blackness is a point of pride. I can see them walking with their heads held high, dignity intact. We can, will, and must get there.
