Hurricane season is about to take a major turn for the worse, say government forecasters
stations. But forecasters are warning the past month of inactivity is not a sign of things to come, since conditions are in place for many more storms to form as the season ramps up toward its historical peak on Sept. 10. A combination of low vertical wind shear, a strong African monsoon and above average sea surface temperatures will lead to conditions favorable for storm development, according to NOAA.
“Now is the time for families and communities to ensure their preparations are in place,” National Weather Service Director Dr. Louis W. Uccellini said.is monitoring three systems, which all have low chances of developing over the next five days. However, slow development is possible for a system expected to be near the Lesser Antilles by early next week, while forecasters also say a tropical wave about to move off of Africa also has a chance to develop in the long-term.
