Hurricane Genevieve will make its closest pass to Baja California late Wednesday into Thursday, prompting a hurricane warning in the Mexican state.
After rapidly intensifying Monday into a Category 4 hurricane, Genevieve was back Wednesday to a Category 3 hurricane with winds of 115 mph -- but now expected to track a bit closer to land than previously forecast.As of late Wednesday morning, the storm was centered about 140 miles south of the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula and moving to the north-northwest at 9 mph.
Tropical triple play in the Atlantic 02:14Genevieve, with winds of 130 mph at its peak intensity, is now tied with Hurricane Douglas as the strongest storm of the 2020 season in the East Pacific.The East Pacific Ocean had been much quieter than average this season, even as the Atlantic has seen record early season activity. With Genevieve's rapid intensification, the Pacific is now the area to watch, but the focus will likely switch back to the Atlantic very quickly.
