'We are not political pawns; we are human beings who are contributing to the future of this nation. We are dreamers. We are immigrants. We are resilient. We are here today, and we are here to stay.' –IFrancoRubio LatinxHeritageMonth

My parents, being the avid news watchers they are, provided me with critical exposure to the world via local antenna TV channels, without sugarcoating reality. I’d hear my dad become extremely vocal about politics and conclude there was a correlation between the issues being discussed and the color of our skin. He tended to become more expressive when topics involving people of color arose, whether the coverage portrayed us accurately or stereotypically.

They were strong-willed and assured me that change would come, and eventually, it did. It was 2008, and despite having been heavily impacted by the, we remained hopeful, especially after President Barack Obama’s win. Even though my parents became quite disoriented and extremely concerned the morning after the 2016 election, they somehow remained hopeful and reassured me that change would come again, with our Latinx community leading the way.

I knew the Latinx population across the U.S. consisted of incredibly hopeful, motivated, hard-working people. I recognized my dad’s work ethic and his hustle as a truck driver, traveling to and from Los Angeles every other day in the blue semi-trailer truck in which he'd invested so much money and time. I recognized my mom’s hustle in working tirelessly to raise my siblings and me, in addition to her commitment as a laborer for a gas station company warehouse.

My parents faced circumstances that were familiar to many working-class families across the West Valley in Phoenix. It felt as though we had limited access to opportunities for something grander — if those opportunities existed at all. I came to understand that this was an injustice, that we needed to overcome this oppression, and that my community was already making strides to fight it.
