As parts of the country reopen for business, stores like Marissa Collections in Naples, Florida are inviting customers back in for some socially-distanced shopping. One Vogue writer shares her experience shopping after months of social isolation.
It’s been 64 days since I left New York. What began as a long weekend to meet my parents in southwest Florida—a trip we planned way back in January—has stretched on , to the point where I’m not quite sure when I’ll return to my Lower East Side apartment. My boyfriend, twin sister, and I left in mid-March, the same day the markets plummeted and Condé Nast employees in New York were instructed to begin working from home. Of course, we had no idea just how dire the situation would become.
My boyfriend agreed with them, naturally. Once I accepted that this would be our home for awhile—and that things had sort of worked out in our favor—my anxiety subsided. We’ve lucked out: The weather here is perfect, a steady 85 degrees with three total days of rain . Florida has managed the outbreak pretty well, and outside of Miami cases are low; in our county, the number is just. Florida’s stay-at-home order was issued about a week after New York’s, and as of yesterday, it’s already lifted.
As the area’s go-to shop for contemporary and luxury fashion, I knew Marissa’s would have brand-new spring collections by Dries Van Noten, Chloé, and Mary Katrantzou, not to mention its jewelry gallery with Irene Neuwirth, Foundrae, Verdura, and more treasures. I’ve missed seeing beautiful things IRL, not online—and, on an unrelated note, I was kind of running out of clothes.
I ended up buying a long cotton-eyelet Rhode dress I found on the sale rack, because it fit the parameters I’d set for myself: long dress, earrings, flip flops. Usually when I buy something, I immediately picture where I’ll wear it first, or how I’ll mix it with different shoes and accessories in my closet.
So why did I buy it? I’m not entirely sure. Our motivations for wearing and buying fashion are changing, and I think it will take us some time to understand just how much. But maybe humans are just optimistic by nature; perhaps I’m holding out hope that I’ll see my friends sooner rather than later. That might explain why others are shopping, too. My sister in New York is finding things online here and there, chalking it up to “wishful thinking.
