These happy family videos feel like they’re simply continuing the long, drawn-out trend of showing off the best of our lives—which may or may not actually exist, or might be exaggerated—for likes.
, the area of the app where the content is all queer all the time. But that doesn’t mean I don’t frequently stumble upon videos of happy families, father-daughter dance duos, and a family’s own inside jokes while scrolling the internet. I’ve come to call this not-uncommon genre Happy Family TikTok. In the videos, everyone is smiling. Everyone is joyful. Parents use pet names for their children and lightly hit each other in jest.
This area of TikTok brings up something deep and dark in me, something I thought I’d buried beneath everything in fourth grade, back before middle school and high school, when it was “cool” to hate your parents. Early on I learned that each year after summer break, I would have to deal with all of the other kids sharing their family vacation photos and talking about what a fun time they’d had with their parents at Disney World or somewhere similar.
It feels petty, especially because it’s not like I don’t want other people to have happy childhoods untouched by dysfunction. I want people to have good relationships with their families. But I just don’t want to have to see it or hear about it.movie was the first representation I saw in pop culture of children who had even a slightly dysfunctional family. No, the main characters Carmen and Juni didn’t have home lives exactly like mine.
