User of EncroChat handle 'Vimto Hawk' was previously cleared of involvement in council worker's murder
Ian Fitzgibbon hatched schemes to traffic heroin and cocaine with men who plotted the fatal shooting of Ashley Dale . The 29-year-old, who was previously cleared of involvement in the council worker's murder, has been jailed for nearly 15 years after being unmasked as the user of the EncroChat handle "Vimto Hawk".
A "note" recovered from his device, dating back to October 2019, referred to him accruing £33,000 in "wages", while his supposedly secret conversations spoke of "moving a large quantity of drugs using his father's name" and a 50kg stash of heroin being available in London. On April 29 2020, he "tasked" Zeisz with purchasing half a kilogram of cocaine then, on May 11, sold three kilograms to Barry in a deal which was "brokered" by Zeisz.
Donal McGuire, defending, told the court that his client had written a letter to the judge in which he "set out his hopes for the future, his regret, his shame" and "his knowledge that he has let a lot of people down". He added: "It is the remorse of a man who has been able to reflect upon his offending, what he has done and the harm to his community in a change of circumstances for him.
"That is the type of event that can change a person such as Ian Fitzgibbon, which causes him to reflect upon those very poor lifestyle matters that bring him before the court today. He knows his life has to change. Fitzgibbon admitted conspiracy to supply heroin and cocaine and possession of criminal property. Appearing in the dock wearing a blue Columbia top and sporting short dark hair, he showed no reaction as he was jailed for 14-and-a-half years.
"In addition, it is accepted by you that the heroin traded directly by you may have come from a stock of 50kg or so of heroin which was located in London and to which you had access. It is clear from the messages that you were wary of moving significant quantities during covid, when travel was restricted and there was a greater risk of being stopped by the police.
"The fact that £12,000 cash was found in your home on your arrest is just a modest indication of the quantities of money being spoken of and changing hands between you and the people you were dealing with. Bearing in mind the nature of the commodities being discussed and the abject misery and devastation caused in this city and across this country by this activity, the tone of these messages is remarkably mundane.
"You have also sent me a letter expressing your regret for being involved in this offending and expressing and a desire to take advantage of your time in custody and improve your prospects of leading a more honest life on your eventual release, particularly in light of the impact your offending is having on your family - especially your child. I am prepared to accept that your expressions are genuine and that you do have a desire to change.
