‘I’ve been given the opportunity to meet other people with similar experiences’

At just two years’ old, Matthew Moss's entire life was turned upside down after a routine doctor’s appointment led to a devastating diagnosis.

The Moss family is now able to enjoy the time they have with Matthew, despite not knowing what the future holds. Support whenever they need it, for as long as they do The Rainbow Trust supports families who have a child aged 0-18 years with a life-threatening or terminal illness. After leaving home Amy entered into a relationship with *Max who was older than her and had a drug habit. To clear his drug debts Max began ‘giving’ Amy to his friends.

The funding from the ball enabled the charity to provide several young people with counselling sessions and purchase 100 worry monsters to allow children and young people affected by domestic abuse to share their worries and experiences. "But I’m here today, I’m dancing and I’ve even done Strictly Come Dancing for charity. I spend 10 hours a day fighting to get support with my charity work, whether it is sick children, deprived children, bullied children, abused children. All I want to do is to help children and that is my legacy.”

Leon now supports other young people at the charity and shares his passions for the arts and creativity to inspire others. Over the past three years Michael Josephson’s support has ensured that no child leaves Mahdlo hungry and no child is left without someone to talk to or a positive role model in their life.

Hannah was rushed to A&E at Salford Royal and by that evening she was paralysed from the neck down. She was transferred to Manchester Children’s Hospital the following day and was diagnosed with Guillain Barre Syndrome . Then Hannah discovered wheelchair tennis which gave her the opportunity to enjoy sports again. She quickly became keen to progress to competition level but needed a custom made wheelchair to suit her needs. Variety The Children’s Charity stepped in again and funded a sports wheelchair for her.

“For me and her dad and her wider family having to see her go through all that, it's awful you can’t explain it. Your life is just suddenly turned upside down.“She’s got so much confidence now and she’s doing everything that she would have been doing. Obviously there’s restrictions and there’s things she can’t do but she tries not to let that stop her. Having that light chair she can go out on her own and to places with her friends, it’s made a massive difference,” Debbie said.

The charity also helps children go on days out, from trips to the beach to a theme park or Santa’s Grotto, and supports disabled young people with work experience placements that help build their CVs and get them into the workforce. Michael Josephson has also pledged to fund the events, races, training, and equipment for wheelchair racer Illias Zghoundi for one year.

Thanking Michael, Illias said: “Thank you very much for helping and supporting Variety through all of these years and hopefully for multiple years to come. And personally from me, thank you very much for helping me because if you guys weren’t here today, I wouldn’t be where I am currently at this stage of parasport.”

She said: “I became an Anne Frank Ambassador because I knew it would give me a voice, allow me to speak out against the prejudices I’ve experienced, and stand up for others. In 2023 the charity reached 119,000 young people in more than 800 schools. Research shows that 87.6% of young people who took part in the programme become more positive towards people different from themselves, with the greatest impact being on attitudes towards Jews.

Then he got a placement at Seashell’s Royal College Manchester, which provides special education and care to children and young adults with the most complex disabilities and additional communication needs. Max’s mum Paula said: “We wish Max could stay at Seashell forever. He’s having the absolute time of his life.

“Having the opportunity to stay at Seashell during the week has increased his independence and self-esteem hugely. Although we miss him during the week, having that space helps us feel energised when he comes home at the weekends.” The new building will support more than 80 college students aged 16 to 25 prepare to leave full-time education and care and, in increasing cases, prepare for the world of work.

Brandon Leigh, chief executive of Seashell, said: “Michael Josephson MBE is a valued supporter of Seashell and without his support, and others like him, the new college building simply wouldn’t go ahead.
