For Spurs’ Tre Jones, Duke legend more than just a coach

Starring at Apple Valley High, Tre was a five-star recruit and one of the top point guards in the 2018 class. By that time, the Jones family, headed by mother and single parent Debbie Jones, had grown close to Krzyzewski. Krzyzewski learned where Tre’s grit came from after Debbie was diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2019. Debbie, who coached Tyus and Tre in youth basketball, eventually endured five months of chemotherapy before undergoing surgery and radiation en route to becoming cancer free in October 2019.“He was very helpful, someone I was able to go to on days when I was feeling a little down,” Tre said.
Tre also can’t get over his good fortune in playing for another legendary coach in Popovich. Both Popovich, 73, and Krzyzewski, 75, graduated from service academies, with Popovich playing at Air Force from 1968 to 1970 and Krzyzewski playing at Army from 1966 to 1969 under Bobby Knight.
