As for the 2024 election, the authors nailed it with the question, do we truly “want someone so ‘seasoned’ that Walter Reed Hospital may replace the White House as the presidential residence?” I am a transgender woman. I knew who I was as a child and teenager, but times were different and I did not transition until I was 46 years old. I regret enduring the years of pain and terror, and a body that sometimes betrays who I am, and not feeling I could “launch” for 20 years. The best available science has advanced, and we no longer have to put children through the trauma and wasted years of a “wrong puberty.
Your editorial regarding transgender athletes and government laws regarding their participation in sports was timely and important. However, this is only the tip of the iceberg. Many of the individuals in these examples are not transgender at all. That is a whole different question involving gender identity development in the brain of the fetus. You have opened an important discussion on a very, very complex topic that deserves a better understanding by the public. I suggest you publish a public service educational piece on this topic that is written by an expert on this complicated subject.
