Lisa Smart has apologised for the comments

Liberal Democrats leader, Sir Ed Davey has come to the defence of his candidate, Lisa Smart, who he says made a "very bad joke" by asking a Liverpool voter if they had been "nicking stuff".

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Cllr Smart, who is hoping to be the next MP for Hazel Grove in Greater Manchester, said she was "genuinely mortified" for causing any offence during her doorstep conversation. She also mentioned the phrase was one she often used when encountering someone at a door who didn't live at the address.

Cllr Smart expressed "genuine mortification", saying she had gone "straight round" to offer an apology after realising her comments might have caused offence or distress. She said: "It's a phrase I've used probably a couple of dozen times in the last month when I've found somebody opening the door and it's not their door.

The Lib Dems have already been accused of using an 'anti-Liverpool tone' in their Hazel Grove campaign. They previously described the fact that the Conservative candidate, Paul Athans, is originally from Liverpool as "yet another insult." Speaking about the anti-Liverpool comments, he added: "This supposed 'joke' is reinforcing derogatory stereotypes.
