Liverpool Women's Merseyside derby hoodoo at Anfield continued with a 1-0 defeat to Everton on Sunday
When Matt Beard addressed the media ahead of the Women's Merseyside derby, it was clear the Liverpool boss was under no illusions about the scale of the challenge facing his side at Anfield.
The Reds had defied the odds to score back-to-back victories against Arsenal and Aston Villa and had the opportunity to go to the summit of the Women's Super League table with a win against their city rivals. That Everton had failed to triumph in either of their opening two clashes - they were beaten by both Brighton & Hove Albion and Leicester City - only compounded the notion this was Liverpool's derby to lose.
In 2019, it was Lucy Hope's strike - a speculative effort from distance that inexplicably squirmed through the gloves of Anke Preuss - that saw the visitors emerge from the clash with three points in tow. With that catalogue of dismal defeats in mind, did Liverpool's torrid Anfield record have a part to play in the Reds' subpar showing on Sunday?
Unfortunately for Kearns - and for Liverpool - the raising of the offside flag promptly put a pin in the Reds' celebrations, much to the dismay of Beard who justifiably felt his side had been on the receiving end of a dubious decision. "We had a perfectly good goal disallowed which is frustrating because it completely probably changed the dynamic of the game," he said after the match.
Liverpool's frustration was compounded in the 31st minute when Megan Finnigan rose to nod home what turned out to be the match-winning goal. Though there were still two thirds of the contest left to play, Finnigan's header proved a fatal blow from which the Reds did simply not recover.
