The Church Street site has a fascinating and tragic history
This month marked the end of an era and a new beginning for Liverpool city centre's Marks & Spencer store.
The blaze gutted the building causing £100,000 worth of damage plus £200,000 in lost stock and the fire also resulted in the loss of 1,200 jobs. Rebuilt almost two years later, the building reopened at the time as the world's biggest department store with five floors until 1871, when it was closed and transformed into the Compton Hotel.
The employee followed Moore into Whitechapel where he saw him take the umbrella out of his trousers. He was promptly arrested and sent to prison for six weeks. Back in Liverpool, decline of the city's economy in the early 20th century led to the closure of the Compton Hotel in 1927. Growing retailer M&S moved into Compton House the following year and made it their flagship store in the city.
It is one of the last photographs of the building as we have known it to be for generations. On our Liverpool ECHO Facebook page, many shared their memories of M&S on Church Street. Christine Williams posted: "End of an era sooo sad the memories it brought, family gifts bought for here & abroad." Luke Adair posted: "My first ever job that in that place in the 90’s!loved the place."
