The drone assault on Russia continued over the weekend as authorities struggled to contain the threat from Ukraine’s ever-evolving unmanned capabilities KieronMonks reports
“Ukraine is acting asymmetrically,” says Dr Marina Miron of the Defence Studies Department at King’s College London. “Russia is on the defensive right now because they cannot predict where these attacks will be taking place.”
warfare, Dr Miron suggests. This is powered by a vast and rapidly assembled domestic industry, drawing on public and private sector resources, which is mass producing an array of designs for land, air, and sea.The programme, boosted by international fundraising campaigns, has led to the creation of homemade models such as the UJ-22, the Shark,– all capable of travelling long distances into enemy territory.
But Ukraine’s unmanned fleet has advantages that ensure it will remain a threat, believes Dr James Rogers, a drone specialist at the Cornell Brooks Tech Policy Institute and“Ukraine has been able to penetrate deep into Russian territory, both in the air and at sea, by capitalising on the technological shortfalls of Russian radar,” he told.
“Russian counter-intelligence units will have to step up their game,” says Dr Miron. “They will most likely have a very wide net of FSB agents and the national guard looking for spots where such drones were launching.”
