On another steamy night in New York, American Madison Keys dominates the reigning Wimbledon champion to earn a semifinals date with the red-hot Aryna Sabalenka.

NEW YORK — In what’s been a round of lopsided quarterfinal matches for the women at the U.S. Open, Madison Keys offered one last entry Wednesday night. The American defeated reigning Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova, 6-1, 6-4, in 86 minutes on Arthur Ashe Stadium and that wasn’t even swift, relative to the others.Second-seeded Aryna Sabalenka beat Quinwen Zheng earlier in the day by the exact same score but took 13 fewer minutes, the fast play all the better to beat the smothering heat.

The Russian, who beat his good friend Andrey Rublev, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4, in the first men’s quarterfinal of the day, put his displeasure with the conditions in no uncertain terms. He looked directly into a television camera mid-match and said, “One player [is] going to die one day, and they’re going to see.”The temperature lowered to a balmy 87 degrees by the time Keys took the court and took command to earn her first semifinal berth at the U.S. Open since 2018.

“To be honest, I didn’t want [Swiatek] to lose. I was watching that match and I was just like, ‘C’mon, win it.’ I was really not like sure, but after some of the upsets, I thought she’s probably going to make it to the final,” Sabalenka said this week. “I was just thinking I’m going to do everything I can possible and impossible to reach the final and decide [the No. 1 ranking] on court. So I was sad, but at the same time I have to be happy because it’s not like she just fell.
