Is Magic Mike's Last Dance a satisfying end to the sexy series?
is what it says on the tin — the final chapter in the saga of the titular erotic dancer, played by Channing Tatum. The third in the series also stars Salma Hayek Pinault as the wealthy and somewhat eccentric Maxandra, who hires Mike to direct a strip show in London. is instead a toe dipped into the very shallow waters of what it means to empower women, to dance, to love — and to put on a show.
The overarching plot is Mike and Max reinventing the typically misogynistic play 'Isabelle Ascending' into a modern feminist story of a woman not forced to choose between love and money, but able to have it all . There is something in that, the idea of plenty as a direct rejection of the idea that woman are born and bred for monogamy.doesn't interrogate that or even show us a glimpse of the aforementioned Isabelle's ascension.
This is a criticism of the way the character was written rather than Hayek Pinault's acting — to keep up with the constant bombastic flamboyance, Hayek Pinault never seems to take a breath. This is juxtaposed with Tatum's deliberate and perpetual even-temperedness, but we see him lose his cool and it would have made Maxandra feel more real if we'd seen her less performative in her own self.
