Colin Christie says he 'made a genuine effort to pay' on the metre and does not believe he should have to pay the fine
A grandfather of four is refusing to pay a car parking fine, despite fearing the possibility of debt collectors or even court action. Colin Christie describes the fine as "grossly unfair".
The 67-year-old says the screen "was almost impossible to read" and the sunlight made it harder for him to see the machine or use it. He even tried to pay online but was unable to, so he left the plot and went to another car park having "made a genuine effort to pay". To his dismay, earlier this year Mr Christie learned that the adjudicator ruled in favour of the car park operator and the fine was increased to £100. Having refused to pay, Mr Christie received a 'final' debt recovery reminder letter on July 26 which says the penalty has now increased to £160, adding that he could be taken to court if the charge is not settled.
"You had to input your registration. I tried all that with no joy and gave up. I'm 67 and my eyesight isn't great. I chatted with some other guys who said you could pay online. I tried and failed to download the app before giving up in frustration.
