Looking back at the junction of Loates Lane and Derby Road in Watford in the mid-1970s.
This picture is around 50 years old and shows a driver carrying out a manoeuvre that is not legally possible today following changes to the layout of this small road that used to have a well-known carpet shop nearby.has again teamed up with its friends at Watford Museum to look back at structures, objects or businesses from the town’s past that have either disappeared or been relocated and this week we look back at this town centre scene.
The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “There are two distinct things in this photo that no longer exist. It looks down Loates Lane from Derby Road . “The most obvious losses are the business premises on the left and out of the scene on the right, Allied Carpets.“A more striking change is that Loates Lane used to be two-way traffic, and you could turn out of and onto Derby Road.
“By the time of this mid-1970's photo though, vehicles turning onto Derby Road could only go in one direction.”We want our comments to be a lively and valuable part of our community - a place where readers can debate and engage with the most important local issues.
