The Oak Leafers battled to a four-point victory over Westmeath to book their place in Monday's draw for next weekend's preliminary quarter-finals

Mickey Harte offered an impassioned defence of his Derry players following Saturday’s win over Westmeath saying they didn’t deserve some of the harsh criticism that came their way following a run of three Championship defeats.

It was a long way removed from a vintage Derry performance, but a marked improvement on their showing in round two when they suffered an 11-point hammering to Armagh in Celtic Park. They’ve worked their socks off the whole year and played some wonderful football, and I don’t like that that’s happening to them.

“For my part, it doesn’t bother me. I don’t think it’s a nice thing to be at but it doesn’t bother me, and those who are directing at me, I just tell them they shouldn’t get any joy out of it because I’m not worried about it.”
