San Diego State buddies who met four decades ago at Peterson Gym still making annual visits to NCAA Tournament
A group of March Madness junkies, most of them San Diego State alums, tailgated Friday afternoon between sessions of the NCAA Regionals at Viejas Arena.
“When it started, they called it a ‘Fishing trip,’ but I’m not sure they ever pulled a pole out,” Steve said. “In 1979, they were at the Final Four with Bird and Magic.” The tournament games are just part of the annual get-togethers, which include rounds of golf before, in between and after the regional.
Steve’s plan last year was to acquire quantity over quality. He was able to acquire a dozen teams, and came out the bigger winner.“They called me ‘Junk Team Steve,’ ” he said. “I bought 13 teams, which is an all-time record. The best team is a No. 7 seed.“The Aztecs broke my heart.”The world’s second-oldest profession — ticket scalping — appears to be on its way out.
“I just do it because it’s something to do on an afternoon. I might make $200-300. There were days when I might pick up 20 seats.“I’ve mostly been the middle man,” Big Ticket said. “If someone had extra seats, I found someone who needed some, I was given what amounts to a tip. Before, you had your own inventory and set your own price.
