People caught on camera inhaling soon-to-be-banned 'hippy crack balloon' laughing gas. Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, will soon be made illegal, but many wonder how the dangerous drug will be policed.

Nitrous oxide suppliers have warned the NHS to review their security after a spike in incidents of thefts since the gas was banned and reclassified as a class C drug.

It comes after a new law introduced in November classified nitrous oxide as a Class C drug and made it illegal to possess it for the purpose of getting high. But as a recreational drug it is often referred to as 'hippy crack', 'laughing gas' or 'loons' - a reference to the party balloons it is inhaled from - and is especially popular with young people. It has been identified as having potentially fatal consequences on the UK's roads with incidents of drug driving involving drivers inhaling it whilst behind the wheel.

The gas is used in catering as a 'cream charger' to give squirty cream bottles their spraying ability. In the same year, four men were jailed for four years after they raided hospitals in Bishop Auckland and Darlington, Country Durham, during the night and filled a transit van with the cylinders they stole.
