An overwhelming majority of teachers in Northern Ireland say verbal and physical abuse from pupils has increased significantly in the last 12 months.
In total, 37% of respondents reported experiencing violence or physical abuse from pupils in the previous 12 months. In all 297 teachers from Northern Ireland responded to the survey, which was conducted during May and June 2023. “We have been asked to implement a zero tolerance mobile phone policy but there are no sanctions enforced if a pupil refuses to switch off/hand over their mobile phone.
