Bridge built in 1861 at Conlig is facing an abandonment order and possible demolition

Agriculture Minister and North Down MLA Andrew Muir has called on Ards and North Down Council to intervene to save Stonebridge at Green Road, Conlig from potential demolition.

Mr Muir, the new Minister for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, and a former Alliance Councillor at Ards and North Down Borough, has been working with local residents for years to save the old Belfast and County Down Railway bridge, which dates back to 1861. A petition asking for its restoration was submitted to the Assembly with over five hundred and eighty signatures before the 2022 collapse.

Mr Muir added: “The council now has the opportunity to work with the Committee and the Department to ensure the preservation of the old railway bridge, and I have written to the Chief Executive to ask that the council explore options for ownership, including assisting local heritage groups to take it over.

“Should the abandonment order proceed, it would put the future of Stonebridge at severe risk. DfI’s Historic Environment Division considers the bridge to be of industrial and archaeological interest, however, the fact remains that it is not listed and if it is abandoned without a plan, there is every chance that it will be demolished.
