Founder of home for sex-trafficking victims in Bastrop County says “predator in our midst” groomed girls, rewarded them with drugs. State official resigns after lashing out at federal judge.
Fallout from this month’s unusual revelation of details about incomplete criminal investigations involving vulnerable children continued Monday as Department of Family and Protective Services Child Care Investigations Division Director Justin Lewis resigned. In his resignation letter Monday, Lewis, a former police officer, said he was frustrated that, at last Thursday’s hearing about The Refuge by a hastily created Senate panel, Masters publicly chastised employees of his Child Care Investigations division. A supervisor and her manager in the investigative division had been terminated over failings related to The Refuge, Masters told senators.
“Politics make me sick,” Lewis texted former department employee Lisa Drain on March 12, two days after Jack held an emergency hearing about The Refuge. “The judge turned it into that quickly.”“The language is insulting and may be considered threatening,” Drain said. “I feel Justin Lewis does not respect the foster care litigation process and I have lost all professional confidence in him,” Drain wrote.
