As a way to head off poaching, Denali National Park began using sled dogs to patrol its boundaries.

Two teams of Denali National Park sled dogs, guided by NPS kennel staff, on their centennial trip from Nenana to Fairbanks in February 2022.

Although the sled dogs’ duties have shifted since the program’s inception, the work they do has continued to preserve the wildness of the park for a century.Denali’s kennel, home to 31 freight-hauling Alaskan huskies, features upgrades you might not find at other rural kennels around the state. Nameplates are bolted to each dog’s log house and poop is scooped on the regular.

Denali National Park and Preserve sled dogs run down Fourth Avenue shortly after crossing the ceremonial start of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in downtown Anchorage on Saturday, March 5, 2022. Children at the Boys & Girls Clubs – Alaska in Anchorage pet one of Denali National Park and Preserve’s sled dogs that was brought there for a presentation on Friday, March 4, 2022.

But then Congress passed the Wilderness Act of 1964, securing a future for the sled dogs of Denali National Park. On Feb. 23, 2022, two teams of Denali sled dogs and kennel staff traveled north to visit the island where the park’s first sled dogs were purchased exactly 100 years earlier. From there, the teams headed upriver on a 55-mile trip to Fairbanks. For about two days, Tomeo and his staff battled ground blizzard conditions, which made the trail difficult, but temperatures remained mild — at least by Interior Alaska standards.

Jenna Jonas said the last three puppies that she and her family have taken in came from the park’s kennel, and they’re also looking into breeding one of their female dogs with a male Denali dog this summer.
