Melvin, coaches have been assessing team but eager to see players in person, start building relationships

He would really like to put on his new brown spring training uniform.

Melvin and his coaching staff, of which all but two are new to the Padres and all but two others are newly working under Melvin, have spent several days over the past month together at the team’s complex. They have gotten to know each other, and they have assessed their team by watching video and comparing notes.“There is only so much you can do without being on a field and watching your team work out and getting to know them in that fashion,” Melvin said.

“Looking at our roster, there are not a ton of potential decisions to be made,” Melvin said Wednesday. “You always want some competition, and there will be. But this roster is what it is, and there’s a lot of good players on there. You have an idea what it’s going to look like.”Players have been locked out since Dec. 2, meaning no team personnel besides doctors have been allowed to communicate with them for more than three months.

“First you have to wait until everybody gets here,” Melvin said. “I’ve been thinking about that particular meeting for a while. I’m not even sure what day that would happen once this thing gets going.”
