Padres testing their star left fielder's balky left calf before clearing him to play for Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic
Juan Soto remained in Padres camp Monday as the other Padres players on the Dominican Republic’s World Baseball Classic team prepared to board a flight to Florida in advance of the tournament.
The Dominican Republic is scheduled to play exhibitions against MLB teams Wednesday and Thursday. Its first WBC game is Saturday against Venezuela. “I think so,” Padres manager Bob Melvin said. “I don’t know for sure at this point. The fact that he’s not going today lends a little bit to maybe not. But I’m still confident that he will, and I know that he wants to. But if this thing lingers a little bit and he’s not confident running, we’ll see where it goes.”The Padres will remain in contact with the Dominican Republic team.
