A huge rescue operation is underway after a large cargo ship struck the bridge in Maryland at 1.30am local time. The collision caused the structure to catch fire before sinking, causing multiple vehicles to plunge into the water below. It's believed seven people fell into the Patapsco River with an unknown number of vehicles also in the water.
Chief Kevin Cartwright, director of communications for the Baltimore City Fire Department, said the bridge had been struck by "a large vessel" causing it to collapse into the Patapsco River. The Maryland Transportation Authority said: “All lanes closed both directions for incident on I-695 Key Bridge. Traffic is being detoured."Chief Cartwright said the main focus for crews now is "trying to rescue and recover these people".
