Update: The pilot and sole occupant of the small plane that crashed into the Matanuska River this afternoon has died, troopers and the NTSB confirmed.
One person died when his plane crashed into the Matanuska River on Thursday afternoon, a National Transportation Safety Board official and Alaska State Troopers said.
Clint Johnson, Alaska chief for the NTSB, said the agency was notified around 1 p.m. Thursday by Alaska State Troopers out of Palmer that a small plane had crashed into the river near Mile 77 of the Glenn Highway, near Chickaloon. The pilot and sole occupant of the plane was confirmed dead at the scene, Johnson and troopers spokesperson Tim DeSpain said.
The Piper PA-18 Super Cub was underwater, Johnson said, and first responders on the scene were attempting to remove it.
