A new KOMO News / Strategies 360 poll found Seattle voters hold mostly unfavorable opinions of the Seattle City Council and the Seattle Police Department.

FILE - Seattle police and firefighters are on the scene of a shooting in north Seattle, at Aurora Avenue North near North 105th Street, on Oct. 18, 2023. According to the poll, 70% of surveyed voters indicated they held an unfavorable opinion of the council, while 64% said they have an unfavorable opinion of the Seattle police.

In 2022, the unfavourability of the council was 57% and the unfavourability rating of the police department was 43%. “When they call 911, they want an officer to respond quickly.,” Chief Adrian Diaz told KOMO News on Wednesday.“If a community member expects their case to be investigated and they’re wondering why they haven’t been contacted, having the shortage in detectives makes a great difference in how they feel about the department,” Diaz said.a federal consent decree that established new procedures for officer discipline.

“We hire from the human race - we know that officers are not going to always necessarily do always the right thing, but we need to have the accountability systems in place to handle that, and that’s what the consent decree was all about," Diaz said. The KOMO News/ Strategies 360 poll also found substantial concerns about crime and public safety in Seattle.“Around our daycares, around our school – if we can’t keep that safe, then we really have a problem. That disregard, I mean, literally having kids crawl to safety. That’s just horrible. We are going to make sure that daycare feels it has the resources it needs to be safe," Diaz said.
